Conversations or Selling

If you called me up right now and tried to sell me something I would hang up.

If I called you up right now I would expect the same thing.

If you were looking for something and Googled to find me as the expert, you might send me an email. And if I responded like a human—not selling, just helping—you just might write me back.

Then we can have a conversation.

And if it turns out you need something that I happen to sell, you just might ask me for it. And you would probably tell someone else, and perhaps you would be smiling about it.

I’d be smiling too.

  1. In the “job world” where people are trying to get new jobs, the rule of thumb is tht the first person to bring up salary gets the worse end of the deal. Somehow initiating the close of the txn is a liability.

Howard, I think you are onto the same kind of thing here. The first person to ask to make a transaction is the one most liable to end the relationship – and all hope of future transactions. Quite a catch 22, no?

I think we are seeing something sort of new (although, if I researched, it might well be ancient too) – Emergent Transactions. Where the transaction come out of the relationship as almost a relationship artifact. That its the emergent property of the transaction in the context of the relationship.

    Make Sense?

  3. Definitely a change in the way to approach traditional sales. Farming vs. Hunting. By farming, we wait for the harvest, and it is bigger than one slow-flying duck.
