Encyclopaedia Britannica Webshare

In an effort to compete with Wikipedia, the de facto standard for bloggers, Encyclopaedia Britannica has launched Webshare

Here’s a quote from the site:

A special program for web publishers, including bloggers, webmasters, and anyone who writes for the Internet. You get complimentary access to the Encyclopaedia Britannica online and, if you like, an easy way to give your readers background of the topics you write about with links to complete Britannica articles.

And here is a nice widget that anyone can get about specific topics to embed into a website: (Edited: WordPress doesn’t like iframes, I guess. Pretend that this is right here.)

I applied for the free membership since I am and have been a web publisher since 1993. I’ll keep y’all posted if I get in. Honestly, I was wondering when Britannica was going to try to remain relevant as the steamroller called Wikipedia dominated the Internet.

  1. Hi. I’m not sure why the iframe of the Britannica widget is causing trouble, but I will ask our widget mavens look at it. In the meantime, please feel free to e-mail me with a description of what happened.

    Thanks,

  3. Just FYI, I was approved in less than 6 hours for this, so if you are running a blog, it is worth checking out. I’ll have to troubleshoot the widget with them and keep you posted.
